The Italian Campaign for the freedom of Marwan Barghouthi and all Palestinian prisoners, launched on the 5th of December 2013, is organising at the occasion of the 12th anniversary of Marwan Barghouthi’s arrest and of the international Palestinian prisoners’ day a solidarity week with Palestinian prisoners, with events in several important Italian cities, including Roma and Palermo. Palermo will at this occasion make official its decision taken recently to grant honorary citizenship to Marwan Barghouthi, thus becoming the first Italian city to take such an initiative and joining dozens of French cities which have already taken a similar step. Luisa Morgantini, former Vice-President of the European Parliament, and Founding Member of the International Steering Committee for the freedom of Marwan Barghouthi and all Palestinian prisoners, will be addressing several events at this occasion. Fadwa Barghouthi, lawyer and wife of Marwan Barghouthi will take part in this important week of solidarity which constitutes one of the biggest mobilisations in support of Palestinian prisoners worlwide. This solidarity week comes at a critical junture, following Israel’s refusal to release 30 pre-Oslo prisoners and with ongoing talks on the need for prisoners’ release in the context of peace efforts, including the release of Palestinian Members of Parliament, notably Marwan Barghouthi. More than ever, solidarity with Palestinian prisoners is needed. The Italian campaign was the first to be set up following the launch of the International Campaign on Robben Island in October 2013, and is once again leading international efforts for the release of Marwan Barghouthi and all Palestinian prisoners.
