Membres du Parlement

Palestinian political leaders are routinely assassinated or arrested as part of an ongoing Israeli effort to suppress Palestinian political life and quest for self-determination. Marwan Barghouthi was the first Parliamentarian to be arrested in 2002. Many more would follow. Following the Palestinian legislative elections of January 2006, arrest of Members of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) became widespread. Ahmad Sa’adat , the General Secretary of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, was abducted in 2006 by Israeli occupation forces from the Jericho prison in violation of an international agreement. In 2008, he was illegally sentenced to 30 years in prison. The arrest campaigns against Palestinian Parliamentarians focused particularly on members of Change and Reform (Hamas), often held under administrative detention. At one point, over one third of the PLC members, i.e. around 50 parliamentarians, were imprisoned by Israel. Today, a dozen democratically elected Palestinian Parliamentarians remain in Israeli jails.
